North America: (New Jersey, Arkansas, Alaska, Montana, North Carolina in the USA)
Colour:Amber is amorphous (has no crystalline structure). It is usually yellow to brown, and some specimens display red to brownish red or reddish brown colors. Blue amber is rare, found mainly in the Dominican Republic with some production from Indonesia and Mexico.
Remarks:Amber is the fossilized, hardnened resin of the tree, formed about 10 -300 million years ago. It will sink in fresh water and float in sea water.
Not all tree resin can be fossilized and become amber. In general, resins that fossilize to amber are secreted by trees in the families Araucariaceae and Fabaceae.
Inclusions found in amber:Amber will usually have inclusions of air bubbles, insects, pine needles, pollen or plant debris. Any clearly visible insect makes a piece of amber quite valuable. Insects mostly found in amber are gnats, flies, wasps, bees and ants. Occasionally, more exotic insects are found in amber, like grasshoppers, beetles, moths, termites and butterflies.
Usambara Effect: Amber may show usambara effect, the phenomenon in which color varies with the path length of light through a sample. (yellow to red)
Blue amber: The greenish blue color observed in some amber from the Dominican Republic and Indonesia is actually fluorescence stimulated by ultraviolet (UV) light. It is a surface fluorescence.
Causes of coloration of blue amber: When natural light strikes blue amber on a white surface, the light passes right through, and is refracted by the white surface. The result is the slight blue hue of blue amber. When the same natural light strikes the amber on a black surface, the light is not refracted by the black surface, but by the actual amber. Hydrocarbons in the blue amber shift the sun's ultraviolet light down in frequency, resulting in the glow of blue amber.
This effect is only possible in some specimens of Dominican amber category, in some Mexican ambers from Chiapas and some ambers from Indonesia. Any other amber (such as Baltic amber) will not display this phenomenon, because its original resin is not from the Hymenaea protera tree.
How's the insect being trapped in amber: Millions of years ago, when tree resin oozed from countless plants, the substance acted as a sticky trap for all kinds of insects.
