Source of name: The name Iolite comes from The Greek word for violet, referring to this stone's violet colour. It was discovered in 1813 and named Cordierite, after the French geologist Louis Coirdier. It has also been named Dichroite, which is a Greek word meaning "two-coloured rock". in reference to it's ability to appear to be different colors when seen from different angles.
