Special Optical Effect:Cat's eye (Chatoyancy) | Tenebrescence
Tenebrescent Scapolite:Some scapolite from Afghanistan is very rarely available as colourless crystals that turn blue after exposure to SW or LW UV, The longer it is exposed, the deeper the colour will become. When the UV light is removed, it slowly turns back to colourless. This transformation back to colourless may take less than a minute. This process is repeatable as often as desired.
History:The name Scapolite is from the Greek words skapos for rod and lithos for stone, refering to the stumpy nature of its prismatic crystals. The name Marialite was given by G. vom Rath, a German mineralogist, in honor of his wife Maria Rosa. Meionite is from the Greek word meion meaning less, because its pyramidal shape is smaller than that of Vesuvianite which it resembles. The name Wernerite is after Abraham Gottlob Werner (1750-1817), a German mineralogist.
Geological Properties:Massive scapolite is found in regionally metamorphosed rocks such as marble, gneiss, and schist. These massive specimens often exhibit a wood-grain or fibrous texture which facilitates their identification. Well-formed, gem-quality, prismatic crystals with a square cross-section are sometimes found in marbles.
In metamorphosed igneous rocks, especially gabbro and basalt, scapolite often occurs as complete or partial replacements of the feldspar grains. Crystals of scapolite are sometimes found in pegmatites and rocks altered by contact metamorphism.
