Source of Name:Named by Charles Upham Shepard in 1848 in honor of its discoverer, Lewis White Williams [December 20, 1804 Goshen, Pennsylvania - September 19, 1873], a mineralogist and geologist of West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Williams was on the 1857 "Camel Expedition" with Lieutenant Ned Beale.

Lizardite is the most common serpentine species. It forms extremely fine-grained scales and massive aggregates, very rarely crystals up to 2 mm of green, light yellow to white, colorless to pale green colour.
