Pietersite was discovered by Sid Pieters in Namibia in 1962.
It is believed only Namibia can found Pietersite; Until 1993, smalll amount of similar stones was found at Hunan China, those stones are released in the market only at 1997. The mine was closed since then. Since the amount of Pietersite from Namibia was limited, which make Pietersite a rare kind of stone.
Pietersite belong to Tiger's-eye, also name as Riebeckite, grow under metamorphic rock.
Tiger's-eye is a pseudomorph in gemmology.
The term pseudomorph, nuberak firned by chemical or structural change of another substance, though retaining its original external shape.
Tiger's-eye is mineral crocidolite to start with, it's a kind of asbestos. Over time, quartz replaced the crocidolite fibres. Retain its fibrous structures, thus create the cat's-eye effect.
Difference between Tiger's-eye and Pietersite:
The appearance fo Pietersite appears as several colours and grow with different directions. It's because during growth, Pietersite has been folded, stressed, swirly broken apart and reformed by geologic process. This is Brecciated. So in short, Pietersite is brecciated Tiger's eye, hawk's-eye or Both.
